He was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, in 1909. At the age of 21, he began to study mainly nude paintings under the guidance of OKADA Saburosuke and FUJITA Tsuguharu (later known as Leonard Foujita by his Christian name) at the Hongo Art Institute in Tokyo. Later in his life he was permitted to join the Kofukai Art Association. In the 1960’s, he switched his style and started to paint landscapes, traveling around Japan. In the 1970’s, he began to exhibit his works to some French exhibitions, and at the age of 65, he went to Europe for the first time, and since then he spent autumn and winter seasons mainly in Paris every year until he turned 80 years old. In 1984, he was awarded Vermeil Medal of the City of Paris for his work. In 2000, he passed away at the age of 90 in Yokohama.
All his works are oil paintings, the themes of which are mainly portraits including nudes, Japanese/European landscapes, and racehorses. We hope his fans and people around the world enjoy his works through our website.
